Gabriel Heinze reunited with fellow Argentine player Lucho Gonzalez at French side Marseille when he signed on July 30, 2009.Marseille paid an undisclosed fee to sign Heinze from Spanish giants Real Madrid. He penned a two-year deal at Marseille on the back of his spell Madrid.

Heinze returned to the French top flight to play for Marseille having previously represented Paris Saint Germain (PSG). He spent three years at PSG earlier in his career.

In his first season at Marseille, Gabriel Heinze scored four goals in 27 league matches on the way to helping the club win the league title. Also, he was part of the Marseille team that won the French League Cup in his first season at the club.
