Gabriel Heinze reunited with fellow Argentine player Lucho Gonzalez at French side Marseille when he signed on July 30, 2009.Marseille paid an undisclosed fee to sign Heinze from Spanish giants Real Madrid. He penned a two-year deal at Marseille on the back of his spell Madrid.


Heinze returned to the French top flight to play for Marseille having previously represented Paris Saint Germain (PSG). He spent three years at PSG earlier in his career.

In his first season at Marseille, Gabriel Heinze scored four goals in 27 league matches on the way to helping the club win the league title. Also, he was part of the Marseille team that won the French League Cup in his first season at the club. In his second season, Gabriel Heinze maintained his status as a defensive stalwart at Marseille. Heinze made a mark on the Clasico between Marseille and former club PSG which ended in a 2-1 win at home for his team. After two seasons at Marseille, it was announced on June 1, 2011 that the defender would be leaving the French club.

Heinze signed for Italian capital club AS Roma on a free transfer on the back of his spell in the colours of Marseille. He made his Roma debut during the 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari in the league..
